Drawing, Painting and Photography Classes


Intro to Portrait Drawing/Painting (ages 12 and up, all levels welcome)

6 weeks: Tuesdays, May 2 – June 6, 2017
4-6pm
$175 members/$195 non-members, all materials included

Students will learn the techniques used to start, establish, and finish a painting, or drawing, using different methods (grisaille layout, block-in, wipe-out, etc.). While learning fundamental principles of light, planes, structure, and proportion, students will learn to construct images that look realistic. The class will usually consist of at least one long pose, allowing the student to attain a fully realized painting, or drawing.


Teen Drawing and Painting for ages 13-17

This class will introduce students to the fundamental principles of drawing and painting. Working with a variety of drawing and painting materials, they will learn to create convincing 2D imagery of the 3D world. No previous experience required.


Introduction to Watercolors

Students will learn basic watercolor techniques, both traditional and non-traditional. Still lives and landscapes will be explored, as elements of composition, design, and basic skills will be refined through color, shading, value, and proportions. No previous experience required.


Drawing and Painting for  ages 9 – 12

Drawing and Painting from Photographs (teens and adults)

Photographs have served as inspiration for artists since the early 19th century.  Learn to interpret the photograph in your own way with new painting techniques, both traditional and experimental.  Create an impressionist landscape or a realistic portrait.  This class is perfect for beginners as well as experienced painters.  All materials provided, just bring your own photo!


Intro to Illustration and Cartooning for Teens and Adults

In Search of Photographic Style

This workshop is tailored to give lots of attention to individuals or small groups. We’ll cover 4 basic photographic styles that have evolved during photography’s 190-year history:
Pictorial (May 13)

Character study (June 3)
Documentary/Social media/Citizen journalism (June 10)
Student choice (June 17)
Student choice (June 24)

Students will view and discuss examples in class and photograph on-site. If they choose to attend more than one session they can complete personal assignments which will be critiqued in class. Manipulation of digital images and its ethics will also be discussed.

Painting on the Passaic for teens and adults

Back to School Special – Bring a Friend for Free!
Ages 7 – 107!
$60 for 2 session class, all supplies included

Learn the art of hand building to create a beautiful ceramic or sculpture piece, from a lump of clay. All materials, glazes and kiln firing are included. Teaching artist Debbie Limoli will work with you to arrange times and dates that fit your schedule. Each class is 2 hours. Each piece will require two sessions.  Debbie is also available to teach small summer camps, Boy Scout or Girl Scout groups, home schoolers and birthday parties or ladies nights out. Children’s Art Class


Introduction to Drawing and Painting (ages 9-12)

Knitting Classes


Deborah Lavine, local fiber artist will be teaching beginner and intermediate knitting lessons at the Farmstead Arts Center.  Maximum registration:  four students per class.

Knitting Part One: Beginners
10:00 am- noon
3 week class: Mondays
Session A: May 1, 8, 15
Session B: June 5, 12, 19
$55.00 for members, $65 for non-members/session

Students will learn the basic skills of knitting using practice yarn to read a pattern and yarn bands, cast on, bind off, knit garter stitch and weave in ends. Students will choose a pattern, yarn, and needles to knit a project in the second class.  Cost of materials not included in registration fee.  No previous knitting experience required.


Knitting Part Two: Intermediate Level
10:00 am – noon
3 week class: Wednesdays
Session A: May 3, 10, 17
Session B: June 7, 14, 21
$55.00 for members, $65 for non-members/session

Students will learn to combine knit stitch and purl stitch together to create ribbed, basket weave, and seed stitches using practice yarn on the first day. Students will be required to practice these stitches before starting the second class in order to begin their project. Students will choose an accessory pattern, yarn, and needles to knit at the beginning of the second class.  Cost of materials not included in registration fee.  Knitting Part One or knitting experience required.


Quick Learn on Double Point Needles
10:00 am-noon
Two-week class: Thursdays
Session A: May 4, 11
Session B: June 1, 8
$25 for members, $30 for non-members

Students will learn how to knit in the round using Double Pointed Needles to create wrist cuffs as an accessory.   Students will purchase yarn and needles at the beginning of the first class which is not included in registration fee.  Pattern will be the same for all students at no cost.  Must have previous knitting experience.


Comedy Workshop For Teens and Adults

Stand-Up Comedy Workshop for Teens and Adults:  Ever ask yourself when watching a comedian on TV- “I wonder if I can do that?”  Are you the life of a party when you tell jokes and stories that have everybody engaged and more importantly, laughing?  Do you have a deep seated desire to try your hand at stand-up comedy?  No matter what your reason, this class will teach the basics of stand-up comedy, help you put together a short act, and top it off with your very first performance!  This workshop offered through Youth Stages, will feature instruction from a working comedian, Kurt Zimmerman, and have time built-in for writing sessions and rehearsal so that you can polish and perform your act.  Instruction will include comedy terms, how to write a stand-up set properly, as well as what to do and what NOT to do after you graduate from this class.
