Fall Classes

Drawing and Painting Classes

Intro to Watercolors
Doug Schiller
1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
6 weeks: Tuesdays, September 25 – October 30
$150 for members, $170 for non-members

Students will learn basic watercolor techniques, both traditional and non-traditional. Still lives and landscapes will be explored, as elements of composition, design, and basic skills will be refined through color, shading, value, and proportions. No previous experience required.


Drawing and Painting for ages 9 – 12

This class is an ideal way to introduce young artists to a variety of different materials, techniques, and the fundamental principles of drawing and painting. Students will strengthen established skills, as they have fun developing and exploring new understandings in color, perspective, and composition through still lives, photographic references, and imagination. Demonstrations and individual attention given. No previous experience required.


Intro to Portrait Drawing/Painting (Ages 12 & up, all levels welcome)

$175 for members, $195 for non-members

Students will learn the techniques used to start, establish, and finish a painting, or drawing, using different methods (grisaille layout, block-in, wipe-out, etc.). While learning fundamental principles of light, planes, structure, and proportion, students will learn to construct images that look realistic. The class will usually consist of at least one long pose, allowing the student to attain a fully realized painting, or drawing.


Drawing and Painting for Adults

Learn how to develop and apply the fundamental principles of drawing and painting and gain a greater understanding of varied mediums and techniques. Light and shadow, color, perspective, and composition will be explored in still life arrangements, nature studies and personal imagery. Demonstrations and individual attention will be given. All levels welcome.


Colored Pencil Drawing

6 weeks: Wednesdays, September 26 – October 31
$150 for members, $170 for non-members

Explore and discover the range and special qualities of watercolor colored pencils. Drawing and painting principles will be applied in the of mixing and blending of colors on paper, overlays, washes, and value judgments. Choices of still life arrangements, landscapes, and personal compositions. Appropriate for beginners and beyond, all materials included.


Indoor Studio Landscapes

6 weeks: Wednesdays, September 26 – October 31
$150 for members/$170 non-members

Students will complete an outdoor landscape indoors working from direct observation, photographic references and imagination.  Step-by-step instructions and demonstrations will further develop an understanding of perspective, shading, color and compositional elements as representational three-dimensional spaces are created.  Personal understanding and progress reinforced with individual and group critiques.  No previous experience required.


Animals Around the World ages 9 to 12

6 weeks: Thursdays, September 27 – November 1
$125 for members, $145 for non-members

See the animals of the world without leaving New Jersey. Students will draw and paint animals from locations around the world as they might be seen in their natural habitats. Have fun depicting your favorite animal. No previous experience required.


Drawing and Painting the Figure (ages 12 and up, all levels welcome)

This class will introduce students to the fundamental principles of drawing and painting. Working with a variety of drawing and painting materials, they will learn to create convincing 2D imagery of the 3D world. No previous experience required.


Painting with Watercolor and Gouache

6 weeks: Fridays, September 28 – November 2
$150 for members, $170 for non-members

Learn to control watercolor and gouache with a variety of techniques, from basic washes to more experimental approaches. Paint a landscape, a portrait, or an abstract design. Bring your own reference photos if you’d like. Beginner or intermediate painters!


Acrylic Painting (All Levels)

4 weeks: Fridays, October 26 – November 16
$100 for members, $120 for non-members

Students will practice the steps and techniques to composing an acrylic painting. Learn how to mix colors on the palette and understand the properties of value and shapes. By experimenting with a variety of mediums that acrylic painting has to offer, you can develop a style unique to you! Materials needed: Canvas or canvas board (any size you feel comfortable working with). I recommend having 2-3 to work on. All other materials to be provided.


Fundamentals of Drawing

Drawing has been the foundation of art throughout the centuries. This class will help students build and refine the techniques needed for drawing. Learn how to use line, shape, and value to form a composition and how to use your observation skills to bring objects to life on paper.


Intro to Illustration and Cartooning for Teens and Adults

Students will learn the basics of anatomy drawing, expressive line & gesture, cartooning and embellishment techniques through different mediums utilized in illustration, comic books & sequential art. All levels welcome.

Animal Portraits

Learn the drawing and painting techniques used for animal portraits. This class will help students compose a portrait and use texture, shading, and line to bring animals to life. Students are recommended to bring in photos for reference and can choose the medium they would like to work in. All materials provided.


Workshops

Painting Under the Harvest Moon

Join us in celebrating the harvest moon at the Farmstead Arts Center.  Work outdoors on paved areas under the full moon in well lit areas (sprayed for insects) with tables and/or easels in place for your use. Drawing and painting supplies provided.


Children’s Art Classes

Sculpture

Play with Clay Ceramic Studio Art Classes
Debbie Limoli

Ages 7 – 107!
$60 for 2 session class, all supplies included

Learn the art of hand building to create a beautiful ceramic or sculpture piece from a lump of clay. All materials, glazes and kiln firing are included. Teaching artist Debbie Limoli will work with you to arrange times and dates that fit your schedule. Each class is 2 hours. Each piece will require two sessions.  Debbie is also available to teach small summer camps, Boy Scout or Girl Scout groups, home schoolers and birthday parties or ladies nights out.

Comedy Workshop For Teens and Adults

Ever ask yourself when watching a comedian on TV- “I wonder if I can do that?”  Are you the life of a party when you tell jokes and stories that have everybody engaged and more importantly, laughing?  Do you have a deep seated desire to try your hand at stand-up comedy?  No matter what your reason, this class will teach the basics of stand-up comedy, help you put together a short act, and top it off with your very first performance!  This workshop offered through Youth Stages, will feature instruction from a working comedian, Kurt Zimmerman, and have time built-in for writing sessions and rehearsal so that you can polish and perform your act.  Instruction will include comedy terms, how to write a stand-up set properly, as well as what to do and what NOT to do after you graduate from this class.  There will also be an opportunity to take part in an open mic session with the instructor to practice for the final public performance.
